1930’s Marble Sundial

Antique English Carved Marble Pedestal shown with Bronze Sundial

Tapered marble pedestal with bronze sundial, imported from Kent, England has a strong line with fine carved detail. With both concave and convex fluting on its tapered column, the strong square base with banding has marked veins and a strong bezel reveal. This antique sundial pedestal would also work well with a large armillary sundial creating tall and stunning focal point. Sundials are one of the oldest tools for measuring time. The Egyptians used a shadow stick or shadow clock as early as 1500 BC. The vertical stick or "gnomon" marked the time of day by the length and position of the stick's shadow. Gnomon in Greek means "the one that knows."
