Shown here is another version of English lead Satyr mask. Satyrs were legendary figures from Greek myth. Half man and half goat, they were followers of Dionysus, the god of agriculture and also of wine. Satyrs were raunchy fellows who drank wine copiously and lived in the woods where they pursued nymphs. This reputation was probably the reason that their images were popular in Victorian gardens. To the Victorians who were interested in classical themes, Satyrs were risque.
