Antique Ribbed Millstone

Antique carved millstone with ribbing imported from England.

Millstones were an agricultural tool important in feeding the world until the Industrial Revolution.  It took two millstones to grind the grain -     a base or convex "bedstone" and then a concave top or "runner" stone that turned on top to grind the grain.   Millstones were carved from     burrstone, sandstone, and limestone.  Smaller millstones could be used by a family or on a small farm, while larger ones were used in mills and     in business.  Millstones make wonderful garden ornaments - as bases, steps, fountains, or as a decorative focal point.
