This version of the arcturus armillary sundial is made entirely of copper with a weathered verdigris finish. There is a threaded stainless steel bar in the round base of the armillary for securing the armillary down to a pedestal top. This size armillary works well with the Carved Turned Pedestal and the Tapered Pedestal.
The armillary is also available with no finish which leaves the copper bright and shiny that will patina naturally. The armillary sundial has a brass band on the inside ring with hand engraved Roman numerals for the hours. This style can be purchased in the 18 inch, 22 or 24 inch Diameter size.
Sundials are one of the oldest tools for measuring time. The Egyptians used a shadow stick or shadow clock as early as 1500 BC. The vertical stick or "gnomon" marked the time of day by the length and position of the stick's shadow. Gnomon in Greek means "the one that knows."
