Beautifully weathered with moss, this hand carved natural limestone sundial pedestal has a baluster form with round capital and turned column. Round tapered pedestal base has acanthus detail below socle. Pedestal is shown with a large round stepped base also carved from limestone. Sitting on the pedestal is our 28"D Bronze Captain's Armillary. Dimensions are for the entire combination of Captains armillary, pedestal and stepped bases.
Sundials are one of the oldest tools for measuring time. The Egyptians used a shadow stick or shadow clock as early as 1500 BC. The vertical stick or "gnomon" marked the time of day by the length and position of the stick's shadow. Gnomon in Greek means "the one that knows."
