A spectacular antique square limestone wellhead with round opening and lovely proportions. Hand carving marks are noticeable both inside the wellhead and on the exterior, carved from a single piece of stone. Great patina. Circa 1800.
Wellheads were added to fresh water wells to protect them from debris falling in and allowed ease of access. This is a noteworthy garden ornament which can be used for planting, as a fountain or focal point, and is a distinctive and unique piece.
